What's In a Name?

One really should reflect long and hard before choosing the names for one's offspring.

It's not just how it will go with the family name, but how it will sound when you yell it at the top of your voice during school vacations and weekends.

Or when you find that they've put their toys in the dishwasher.

Or when they've decided that they are not going to get dressed no matter how many times you've asked them.

Or how the name will sound when followed by, "Mom, _____ pushed me" or "Mom, _____ won't share their toys with me" or "Mom, _____ keeps touching me!"

It's important to give names to our children that we like a lot.

Because before the age of 7, you are going to have found at least 348,259 ways of saying the same name, over and over again.

Bill Cosby explained it best in his sketch about Jeffery.

Replace the airplane with a grocery store or doctor's office, and you've lived my horror.

Times three.

Vive les vacances!

A friend of mine was called Yann instead of Yann-Sebastien because it would take too long to yell Yann-Sebastien when he was misbehaving...

Not sure that my parents had to yell at me so much... not after the icy cold shower for my last tantrum (I was 3)!

I have to agree with Sue. And K - you picked the perfect clip to illustrate my worst nightmare! And there is no way to avoid those flights.

How about being the youngest of six, "Kelly, Pat, Mary, Terry, Andy, oh s--t, da-it Katy, get over here." A comedian once said, for the first ten years of his life, he thought 'da-it' was his first name!!! xoxoxox

That was also Bill Cosby in "Himself" which is one of the funnest videos/CDs ever.

Here is the quote:
It was because of my father that from the ages of seven to fifteen, I thought that my name was J.C. and my brother, Russell, thought that his name was Da--it. "Da--it, will you stop all that noise?" And, "J.C., sit down!" One day, I'm out playing in the rain, and my father yelled, "Da--it will you get back in here!" I said, "Dad, I'm J.C.!"

Thanks Sean, I knew I'd heard that a long time ago. My Dad had all the Bill Cosby LP's, we listened to them growing up. My favorite is when the parents leave and put snakes on the floor so Bill won't get out of the crib. "Just a little snakey lick when I stick my toe out."

He really is hilarious. On YOUTUBE there is the "grandparents" sketch that just makes me howl as well. Such a good laugh and timeless.

Dave, for you or your wife. Because when the full name yelling doesn't work, I usually need something to help my temper!!!

I saw him in Green Bay when I was a kid. Very funny and about the only comedian where you could bring a kid and not worry.
